Sister Gina Hema gave this month's presidency message. She based her lesson on the youth theme for the month, Spiritual and Temporal Self-Reliance. Using the scriptural account of Nephi, from the first chapter in the Book of Mormon, Gina taught the importance of acting in order to gain knowledge. Nephi desired to know the meaning of Lehi's dream. He acted upon that desire and was able to learn for himself about the tree of life that his father saw.
Sister Hema taught that each of us can likewise know the things of God if we will act on our desire to learn. Joseph Smith acted on his desire to know which church to join by praying to God for answers. It was AFTER he prayed (or acted) that the Restoration of the Gospel took place.
Sister Heath reminded us that the Word of Wisdom came in response to an inquiry about the tobacco use in the early days of the church. Emma Smith was displeased with the tobacco all over the floor of their meeting place and encouraged Joseph to inquire of the Lord about the situation. We now have this law of health as a result of that action.
Heavenly Father has given us the ability to learn for ourselves every needful thing by following simple pattern demonstrated in the scriptures. If we desire to learn, and act upon that desire by seeking and praying, we will receive knowledge from on high.
