Our annual birthday party for the Relief Society was held on March 26, 2013. The theme was "Random Acts of Kindness" with a Cat-in-the-Hat twist. All Relief Society sisters and Young Women were invited to attend.
The cultural hall was transformed into the land of Katroo (where "they sure know how to say 'Happy Birthday to You!'")
Each table featured some familiar characters from the stories of Dr. Seuss. Which table was your favorite?

We enjoyed a scrumptious salad bar with all of the fixings---nestled amongst the Truffula Trees. We also took advantage of the conversation starters found at each table to become better acquainted with one another.
Of course, a birthday party wouldn't be complete without a game or two! In our favorite game, teams raced to pop their balloons and unscramble the words found inside to recreate quotes about kindness.
Here are the quotes we used:
Give yourself entirely to those around you. Be generous with your blessings. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.
---Steve Marboli
When we treat people merely as they are, they will remain as they are. When we treat them as if they were what they should be, they will become what they should be.
---Thomas S. Monsoon
You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.
---Ralph Waldo Emerson
No one has ever become poor by giving.
---Anne Frank
I have wept in the night
For the shortness of sight
That to somebody’s need made me blind;
But I never have yet
Felt a tinge of regret
For being a little too kind.
---Source unknown; quoted by Thomas S. Monson
The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.
---Mahatma Gandhi
Love one another as Jesus loves you.
Try to show kindness in all that you do.
Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,
For these are the things Jesus taught.
---Janice Kapp Perry
Kindness, love, patience, understanding, and unity will increase as we serve, while intolerance, jealousy, envy, greed, and selfishness decrease or disappear.
---Carlos Amado
Often, the greatest manifestations of love are the simple acts of kindness and caring we extend to those we meet along the path of life.
---Joseph B. Wirthlin
After the games, welcomed some of our soon-to-be-graduating Young Women into Relief Society and heard some uplifting thoughts from our Relief Society President Sheri Lloyd.
A birthday party would also not be complete without birthday cake. Not only were these cakes festive and a feast for the eyes, but they were also delightfully delicious!
The highlight of the evening was the slideshow depicting some of the acts of kindness our Relief Society sisters, Young Women, and their families performed over the month of March. These seemingly insignificant acts are only a small part of what we do on a daily basis as daughters of God and followers of Jesus Christ. (See video below.)
Heartfelt thanks to the committee and the many others who helped with the festivities. Happy 171st Birthday to the Relief Society!
